What is block Caving method ?

  • 1
  • 1

In the underground mining technique known as “block caving,” an ore body is undermined until it finally collapses under the weight of its own mass. Through funnels and tunnels that have already been built, the debris that fills the artificial cavern created by this procedure is removed. With output rates as high as 100,000 tons per day, it is especially useful for big, low-grade ore deposits and provides a significant cost savings as compared to conventional mining processes. When surface resources run out, the technique can be used for deeper mining operations because it reduces the amount of drilling and blasting.

This method offers several advantages but also disadvantages.

? What are the main advantages of block caving over other mining methods ?

Block caving offers several advantages over other mining methods:

?High Production Rates: Capable of extracting 30,000 to 100,000 tons per day, making it efficient for large deposits.

?Low Operating Costs: Costs can be about one-tenth of conventional methods, benefiting from reduced drilling and blasting expenses.

?Safety: Miners do not need to enter the caving area, enhancing safety.

?Reduced Surface Impact: Smaller surface footprint and significantly less waste disposal compared to open-pit mining.

?Mechanization and Automation: High degree of mechanization allows for efficient operations.

? What are the disadvantages of Block Caving method ?

Block caving also has several disadvantages:

?Long Development Time: The preparation phase can take years before mining begins due to extensive tunneling and infrastructure setup.

?High Initial Capital Investment: Significant upfront costs are required for equipment and construction.

?Careful Planning Required: The method necessitates meticulous planning to ensure safety and efficiency.

?Not Universally Applicable: It is unsuitable for all ore bodies and rock conditions, limiting its use in certain mining scenarios.

?Large-Scale Caving and Subsidence: This can lead to environmental impacts and challenges in managing surface stability.

To conclude, Block Caving (BC) extraction approach is a useful method used in underground mines. It is particularly helpful for large, low-grade ore deposits and offers a notable cost reduction in comparison to traditional mining techniques. Although the various advantages as mentioned previously, BC necessitates meticulous planning to ensure safety and efficiency.
