A coreyard is a designated area at a mining or exploration site where drill cores (cylindrical samples of rock obtained during diamond drilling) are received, logged, stored, and sometimes prepared for analysis. It plays a critical role in the geological resource evaluation process.
Why does a coreyard matters?
As mentioned above, it plays a critical role in the geological modeling of the ore. The main uses of coreyard are:
Central hub for core logging
This is where geologists examine the physical rock cores to record geological data as rock types, structures, mineralization, alteration, fractures, etc. High-quality core logging supports accurate resource modelling, grade estimation and mine planning.
Core handling and storage
Proper storage ensures cores are preserved, organized by depth and location, and available for re-examination during future exploration or audits. Core trays are labeled and stacked often under shelter to prevent weathering.
Sample preparation and splitting
Cores may be cut (split) lengthwise to retain half for records and send the other half to the lab for geochemical analysis; that helps to ensure that QA/QC procedures are followed.
Data integrity
A well-managed coreyard contributes to data reliability, which is essential for JORC/NI 43-101 or other reporting codes. Mislabeling, poor storage, or contamination can compromise the entire exploration program.
