Common causes of mining project failure include a variety of technical, managerial, economic, and environmental factors:
Mining projects often face significant challenges due to a shortage of skilled personnel and technical experts, which can threaten sustainability, particularly in deep, remote, or hard-to-access deposits. This issue is compounded by declining ore body quality, where insufficient exploration or mischaracterization leads to investment in low-grade deposits, driving up operational costs and undermining profitability(LLC, 2018).
Mining projects often face setbacks due to poor project management and underestimation of complexity, including inadequate planning, managerial competence, and the ability to handle time, cost, and leadership challenges. These issues frequently lead to increased capital costs from inaccurate studies, unforeseen rework, and execution delays, resulting in cost overruns and financing difficulties. Additionally, projects may fail to achieve expected production because of insufficient resource understanding, suboptimal engineering design, or inadequate exploration and testing(The Fundamental Issue With Failed Mining Projects, n.d.).
Environmental and social pressures, such as regulatory hurdles and the demand for sustainable practices, can delay or halt projects if not properly addressed. Additionally, project failures often stem from insufficient stakeholder support, misaligned expectations, or unclear project scopes, especially in initiatives involving technological change or process mining(6 Challenges That Mining Industry Is Facing Now, n.d.).
