How does rolling resistance influence haul truck fuel consumption and fleet productivity?

Haulage operations represent over fifty percent of total operating expenses in surface mining, with diesel fuel standing as a primary operational expense. The retarding force known as rolling resistance occurs between truck tyres and the road surface from tyre deformation, surface roughness, and tyre sinkage. Heavy haul trucks must constantly overcome this force to maintain momentum across mine road networks. This operational friction acts as a direct tax on engine output, diesel burn, travel speeds, and overall fleet tonnage.

A haul truck engine must generate sufficient tractive effort to overcome total resistance, which combines grade resistance and rolling resistance. For a loaded 384-tonne truck, every one percent increase in rolling resistance adds approximately 37.7 kilonewtons of resistive force. Engine performance studies indicate that overcoming surface friction consumes ten to thirty percent of total vehicle fuel. Unmonitored road deterioration leads to temporary fuel overconsumption of up to eighty-seven percent over a single operating day. A two percent reduction in rolling resistance cuts total haul road fuel expenditure by up to forty percent, yielding substantial financial savings across active mining fleets.

Elevated rolling resistance demands greater rimpull force, forcing heavy vehicles to operate in lower gears at reduced velocities. Surface roughness increments of ten centimetres increase rolling resistance by five percentage points, dropping average truck speeds by twenty-five percent. Round-trip travel durations lengthen by up to twenty-six percent as a result, directly decreasing completed haul cycles per shift. Simulation models show that a shift in resistance from two percent to six percent causes a four-point-eight percent drop in total material output. Slower cycle times also disrupt shovel-truck matching, lowering loader utilisation from ninety-five percent down to ninety-one percent and creating costly queues.

Proactive haul road maintenance transforms unpaved corridors into high-performance assets. Standard pavement maintenance practices like routine motor grader passes, rolling dynamic compaction, and chemical polymer stabilization prevent rutting and surface loss. Polymer treatments seal wearing courses against water infiltration, cutting water truck passes by eighty to ninety percent while holding rolling resistance at two to three percent. A fifty percent reduction in road resistance decreases capital equipment needs by twenty-nine percent and operating expenses by twenty-five percent. Furthermore, stabilized road networks cut fleet fuel burn, eliminating thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually to advance corporate Scope 1 decarbonisation targets.

Surface mine haul roads represent a powerful operational lever rather than a simple support function. Systematic management of surface friction establishes a direct chain of performance gains: smooth pavement lowers rolling resistance, increases travel speed, shortens cycle times, and reduces fuel burn. Mine operators achieve higher tonnage output alongside reduced operating expenditures by prioritizing haul road quality. Investments in continuous road condition monitoring and polymer stabilization yield immediate returns through diminished diesel usage, extended tyre life, lower fleet capital requirements, and lower carbon emissions across the entire mining operation.
