Despite the benefits and initiatives, several challenges and barriers hinder the implementation of transparency in mining. Political corruption, lack of enforcement capacity, and resistance from some mining companies can undermine transparency efforts. In some countries, governments may be unwilling to disclose contracts or revenues, fearing that it will weaken their bargaining power with mining companies.
Another challenge is the complexity of mining operations. Mining projects often involve multiple stakeholders, complex legal and regulatory frameworks, and long time horizons. This complexity can make it difficult to collect, verify, and disclose information in a timely and accurate manner.
Furthermore, data privacy concerns can limit the extent to which mining companies are willing to disclose information. Companies may be reluctant to share commercially sensitive data or information that could compromise their competitive advantage. Striking a balance between transparency and data privacy is essential to promoting responsible mining practices(“What Role Does Transparency Play in Mining?,” n.d.).
