Collision at a mine site

On 24 May 2019, a collision occurred between a mode and a manned excavator. Due to the increase in automation in mining, a causal investigation was conducted to allow learnings to be shared across the industry.

What can be done to avoid collisions at mine sites?

To avoid collisions at mine sites, several strategies and technologies can be implemented, focusing on enhancing safety through advanced systems and protocols.

Effective Tracking Systems

Proximity Detection Systems (PDS) are essential for monitoring the positions of workers and machinery. These systems utilize tags worn by personnel and attached to vehicles, feeding real-time data to a control center. This allows operators to visualize the relative positions of all entities within the mine, significantly reducing collision risks. Alarms can be triggered when individuals or equipment come too close, providing early warnings to prevent accidents.

Enhanced Visibility

Visibility is critical in preventing collisions. Implementing systems that improve situational awareness can help miners better understand their surroundings. For instance, proximity alert systems can notify operators of nearby personnel or obstacles, thus managing vehicle interactions more effectively. Additionally, using satellite technology can provide a comprehensive view of surface operations, allowing for better monitoring without the need for individual tagging of every object.

Advanced Collision Avoidance Systems

Modern collision avoidance systems (CAS) integrate various technologies to prevent accidents. These systems can automatically intervene by slowing down or stopping vehicles when a potential collision is detected. For example, some CAS utilize LIDAR technology to analyze the environment and adapt safety measures based on real-time conditions, such as speed and terrain.

Training and Safety Culture

Establishing a strong safety culture is vital. Comprehensive training programs should be provided to ensure that all workers understand the importance of safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Regular safety briefings and hazard identification exercises can maintain heightened awareness among miners.

Regulatory Compliance and Collaboration

Collaboration among mining companies, equipment manufacturers, and regulatory bodies enhances the effectiveness of collision prevention strategies. Adopting industry standards like ISO 21815-2 facilitates better integration of safety technologies with existing machinery. Continuous improvement in PDS and CAS through shared learning and cooperation helps address evolving safety challenges in mining operations.
