Transparency in tailings reporting is a critical aspect of responsible mining, aimed at ensuring public access to detailed information about tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to enhance safety, environmental stewardship, and community trust. This transparency is increasingly driven by adherence to international standards like the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM)(ICMM Members to Publish Progress on Implementing the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management in August, n.d.).
Mining companies are now required to provide detailed, site-specific public disclosures regarding the design, operation, monitoring, and closure of their tailings storage facilities (TSFs). These disclosures typically include risk assessments, incident reports, and mitigation strategies, helping stakeholders understand how potential environmental and safety risks are being managed.
Transparency in tailings management brings significant benefits. Clear, consistent reporting fosters trust among communities, investors, and regulators, reinforcing a company’s social license to operate. It also helps minimize reputational and operational risks by ensuring potential issues are identified and addressed proactively, rather than reactively.
Some industry leaders are setting benchmarks in this space. For example, Barrick Gold publishes tailings disclosures aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). Its Safe Closure Program is a strong example of responsible lifecycle management and open communication, serving as a model for others in the sector(“Barrick Publishes Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management Disclosures,” 2025).
Global initiatives are also pushing for greater accountability. The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) mandates that its members publicly report on their progress toward GISTM compliance. Additionally, the newly established Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI) supports independent audits and certifications to ensure TSFs meet recognized safety and environmental standards.
What if the key to unlocking the next phase of growth isn’t in new ideas, but in reimagining the foundations of our existing processes?
