In a recent post, we saw that there are three main types of transport truck in the mining sector: rear, bottom and articulated dump trucks. After describing them, the advantages and disadvantages of each are presented in table 1 (Soofastaei, 2016).
| Truck Type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
| Rear Dump Truck | – Mobile and flexible for different work areas
– Handles various material sizes and properties – Suitable for medium transport distances – Can operate on gradients up to 12% |
– Requires well-maintained road surfaces
– Higher labor costs compared to conveyors |
| Bottom Dump Truck | – High speed on flat hauls – Mobile and flexible in work areas | – Performs best on gradients less than 5%
– Needs good roads – Requires drive-over dump hopper – Best for light, fine materials (e.g., coal, bauxite) due to lightweight trailer and doors |
| Articulated Dump Truck | – Can handle rough, boggy, or uneven floors
– Suited for various material types – Effective on steep gradients |
– May have higher maintenance requirements
– Risk of sideways tipping – Higher capital cost per capacity |
