Discover the main safety challenges in underground mining and effective solutions to protect workers and ensure a secure environment.
Underground mining is one of the most hazardous occupations in the world, presenting significant safety challenges that require stringent risk management strategies. The dangers range from cave-ins and toxic gas exposure to equipment-related injuries and ventilation concerns. Addressing these risks with cutting-edge technology and well-enforced safety protocols is paramount to protecting miners and ensuring efficient mining operations.

One of the newer approaches to improving underground mining safety is backfilling with mine waste, especially tailings. The latest advancement in this area is Natural Fiber Reinforced Cemented Paste Backfill (NFR-CPB). In our research, we experimented with treated hemp fiber as reinforcement in the cemented paste. The result? A material with the fracture toughness needed to withstand underground stresses better, while giving tailings a second life.
