Ore sorting offers numerous benefits in mining, particularly in boosting efficiency, cutting costs, and promoting environmental sustainability. A key advantage is the significant reduction in energy use during mineral processing. By detecting and removing waste material early, ore sorting greatly reduces the volume needing grinding and milling. Research indicates that advanced sensor-based sorting can lower comminution energy demands by more than 60%, resulting in both cost savings and a reduced environmental impact(The Benefits of Ore Sorting and Sensing in Mining, n.d.).
Another major advantage of ore sorting is the improvement in mineral recovery and ore grade. By concentrating valuable minerals before processing, sorting enhances recovery rates and enables more precise grade control. In one example from a lead-zinc operation, sensor-based sorting allowed low-grade ore to be upgraded and valuable minerals to be recovered from waste rock piles, increasing resource utilization and boosting revenue(Gleeson, 2023).
Ore sorting also supports environmental sustainability by minimizing tailings generation and water consumption. By reducing the amount of waste sent to tailings facilities, it improves tailings management and lowers environmental risks. Furthermore, the associated energy savings help cut greenhouse gas emissions, aligning mining operations with stricter environmental regulations(Process & Solutions, 2022).
