Persistent commodity price volatility has made it increasingly challenging for mining firms to secure traditional debt or equity financing. To fund new capital-intensive projects—or expand existing ones—minerals companies are turning to inventive alternative financing methods. One such approach, metals streaming, emerged in the Americas around 2004 and was spearheaded by Silver Wheaton, Franco‑Nevada, and Royal Gold Inc. Although this financing structure is relatively new to Australia’s resource sector, it has a proven track record and may be particularly attractive to Australian junior and mid‑cap miners(Metals Streaming Agreements, 2016.).
Metals streaming involves an agreement between a mining company and an investor, in which the investor pays upfront (sometimes in staged payments) in exchange for the right to purchase a portion of the mine’s future production at a fixed rate below market price. The production covered by the agreement—known as the “stream”—is often a by‑product, such as precious metals derived from the mine’s primary commodity(Stream Financing, 2013.).
Typically, the investor’s upfront payment functions as a deposit, and the agreed fixed price (indexed for inflation) is paid per unit delivered over the life of the mine—or over a defined, often long, term. This structure effectively allows the miner to monetize future production before operations begin.
Imagine financing a mine without taking on debt, and getting paid in physical metal! That’s the essence of streaming financing in mining. What makes this alternative funding model a game-changer for both miners and investors? Share your insights!
