Job description
According to a book published by the Mining Industry Human Resource Council, the process superintendent:
- Is responsible for the safety, production, quality and budgets for their processing operations.
- Works with senior managers, other superintendents and their process supervisors to control processing machinery to convert mined materials into products.
- Processing activities vary with the mineral being mined but can include the separation of waste, washing, crushing, grinding, leaching, electrical, chemical or metal processing and packaging.
- Is Responsible for people, equipment, tools and materials in their operations.
- Prepares production plans, delegate work to their teams, oversee progress, solve problems, and take corrective action when required.
- Prepares budgets and monitor spending.
- Prepares reports and briefs on production, safe ty, environment, project progress, and more.
- Leads and participate in meetings and briefings.
- Recruits, train and develop employees, with support from process supervisors and human resources (HR) specialists.
- Oversees the development of supervisors, providing support and guidance.
- Works with the maintenance team to ensure optimum asset utilization.
- Works with trade union(s), supervisors and HR department to avoid and resolve personnel issues and grievances.
- Liaises with suppliers and consultants.
Process Superintendents divide their time between the office and the mill, where they are actively involved in operations and regularly lead or participate in management meetings for the mill or mine.
