Quellaveco is a large-scale copper mine located in the southern part of the Peru. Construction of the project was completed in July 2022, and production has already started. It produces approx. 300 kilotons per year (CuEq). It is the first mine in the country to deploy autonomous mining equipment such as trucks and drills and is 100% powered by renewable energy. MC has a 40% stake in Anglo American Quellaveco and contributes to increasing project value(Anglo American Quellaveco, n.d.).
More so, Quellaveco is an open pit copper mine with ore processing capacity of 127,500 tonnes-per-day via conventional crushing, grinding and flotation technology. First copper production was achieved in mid-2022. The mine is expected to deliver around 300,000 tonnes per annum of copper in the first ten years of operation.
It is the first 100% digital mine in Peru, with real-time information directed to an Integrated Operations Center that unifies all mine processes at a single site for greater predictability, decision making, scenario visualization and highly efficient water usage(Quellaveco Open Pit Copper Mine in Peru – Project Case Study | Fluor, n.d.).
A day at Quellaveco isn’t just about extracting copper, it’s about seeing cutting-edge technology and sustainability in action! This mine is a true example of modern mining.
What aspect of Quellaveco’s innovative approach (like its autonomous trucks or digital twin technology) do you find most impressive, and why? Share your thoughts!
