In the area of underground mining and civil tunneling, people often talk about a “Jumbo Drill” and a “Longhole Drill,” but they describe two very different machines designed for specific purposes. Understanding the difference is vital for efficiency and safety on the job.
Jumbo drill: the precision excavator
A Jumbo Drill, also called a development drill, is a workhorse for both drift development work and tunnel boring operations. The name is derived from the initial concept of a single machine that has a number of drilling booms, like a “jumbo” of drills. Most Jumbo Drills are mounted on a robust platform that has two or three articulated booms, each of which has a drill of its own. These machines are intended for drilling a series of blast holes into the tunnel face, which are 2 to 6 meters long. The objective is to provide a precise drill pattern that is clean and accurate. These machines are responsible for excavating the initial tunneling access routes, which are referred to as drifts, ramps, and caverns.
Longhole drill: the production specialist
The Longhole Drill, also referred to as the Production Drill, is intended for bulk ore removal. Once the developing is finished and the stope is prepared, the Longhole Drill takes over. These drills are designed to make deep holes, sometimes 30-50 meters, and in some cases, deeper, in the ore. They operate from a single point, cutting long, straight holes in a pattern. The idea is to make blast holes to break a large piece of ore in a controlled fashion, allowing for its removal at a later date. These drills do not move much, but they must be incredibly powerful and stable to keep them straight over long distances.
The core difference
Jumbo Drill is all about development work, building up the infrastructure to support the mine. Longhole Drill is about production work, removing the mineral from the ground. One is about accurate face drilling for small tunnels, while the other is about drilling long deep holes for large-scale blasting. Choosing the right equipment makes the work safer, easier, and more profitable.
