Mines can contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation and land rehabilitation by implementing scientifically guided restoration practices that restore ecosystems, stabilize soil, and support wildlife habitat.

Ecosystem restoration in mining involves advanced rehabilitation techniques such as returning topsoil with organic matter and seeds, reducing soil compaction, and contouring land to mimic natural landscapes. These practices promote the return of native vegetation and functional ecosystems, exemplified by Alcoa’s jarrah forest program in Australia, which restored nearly 97% of original species richness(REHABILITATION OF DEGRADED SITES – Unasylva 207, n.d.).

Habitat creation and fauna recolonization involve adding logs, rocks, and tree stumps to rehabilitated areas, providing shelter and resources for wildlife. These efforts support biodiversity by encouraging animal return, while ongoing monitoring ensures habitats meet the needs of local fauna.

Multifunctional post-mining land use transforms rehabilitated mines into conservation areas, farmland, renewable energy sites, or recreational spaces.
