Technology reduces human risk in underground mining primarily by removing workers from hazardous environments, enhancing hazard detection, and enabling rapid emergency response through automation and advanced sensing systems.

Remote and autonomous operations use robotic drills, loaders, and haul trucks to handle high-risk tasks like excavation and ore transport without on-site personnel. Teleoperation and remote control let operators manage equipment from safe locations, reducing exposure to hazards such as unstable tunnels, gas pockets, and blasting zones(Mining Automation: Boosting Safety & Efficiency 2025, n.d.).

Real-time hazard detection and alerts use sensors and IoT devices to monitor underground conditions like gas levels, ground stability, and equipment performance.
