How do ground-based radar systems (GBR) work in detecting slope movement in real time?

Ground-based radar (GBR) systems, such as CHCNAV’s GeoSAR, are advanced remote sensing technologies crucial for real-time detection of slope movement in open-pit mining.

These systems operate by emitting radar waves towards the slope and precisely measuring the phase shift of the reflected signals. Even minute changes in the distance to the slope surface, indicative of ground deformation, cause a detectable phase shift, allowing for millimeter-scale movement detection in near real-time.

GBR systems offer significant advantages for continuous slope monitoring. They provide wide-area coverage, often 360-degree, which is essential for the extensive and irregular deformations common in open-pit mines.

Unlike optical or GNSS-based systems, GBR is highly effective in all weather conditions, ensuring uninterrupted monitoring through rain, fog, or dust. GBR systems can instantly scan new surfaces created by excavation without requiring physical installation or manual adjustments, providing fast and safe monitoring as the mine evolves.

This comprehensive, real-time deformation picture allows mine engineers to detect potential hazards early, enabling timely interventions and enhancing overall mine safety and operational efficiency (CHCNAV, 2025).
