Roof bolting is a structured process involving drilling, resin insertion, and bolt installation to offer primary support for underground mine roofs. It begins with drilling a hole into the roof rock to a specific depth using a mechanized rig. The hole’s diameter and depth are matched to the bolt size and the geological conditions of the rock. Accurate hole dimensions are essential for effective bolt performance and to prevent resin waste(INSTALLATION AND PROCEDURES – Mining Science and Technology, n.d.).
After drilling, a resin cartridge is inserted into the hole to act as a bonding agent. As the roof bolt is installed, it mixes and activates the resin, which quickly hardens to secure the bolt in place. Using the “spin-to-stall” method, the bolt is tensioned until a set torque is reached, with a bearing plate distributing pressure to stabilize the roof rock(Understanding the Operation of Grinding Mills in the Mining and Mineral Processing Industry – NEWS – SMMVIK Machinery, n.d.).
Modern roof bolting is largely mechanized, with motorized bolters performing drilling, resin insertion, bolt installation, and tightening in one continuous operation. Many machines such as does provided by Mine Master now feature automation and remote control, improving safety by limiting operator exposure to roof-related risks. The process is closely monitored to ensure regulatory compliance and effective roof stabilization(Saeler, 2023).
