How to accurately determine the concentration of copper in rock ores and alloys?

Determining copper concentration in rock ores and alloys relies on several proven analytical methods. One of the most widely used is Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS), particularly Flame AAS, which offers a reliable and cost-effective way to measure copper across a broad range from parts per million to weight percent.

Samples are typically ground and diluted during preparation, and automated systems can enhance both accuracy and processing speed. Known for its low relative standard deviation and strong alignment with certified values, Flame AAS is a staple technique in mining laboratories(Understanding the Operation of Grinding Mills in the Mining and Mineral Processing Industry – NEWS – SMMVIK Machinery, n.d.).

More so, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy is widely used for quick elemental analysis by detecting characteristic X-ray emissions from a sample. It allows for fast, non-destructive measurement of copper and other metals in ores and concentrates. Accurate results depend on proper calibration with reference standards. XRF is versatile and suitable for both laboratory and on-site analysis across various sample types(Methods for Determining Copper in Ore: Chemical and Physical, n.d.).

For projects requiring high sensitivity and detailed elemental analysis, techniques like ICP-OES and ICP-MS are invaluable tools. Their ability to detect trace levels of copper and other elements makes them essential during exploration and advanced assay stages, offering precise data to guide decision-making and resource evaluation(Copper-Analysis, n.d.).
