How to calculate penetration rate in drilling?

  • 0

The Rate of Penetration (ROP) is an important parameter for a drilling project timeline. Nevertheless, high ROP would generate more cutting which results in the need for effective cutting removal (Mohammadsalehi & Malekzadeh, n.d.). Increasing ROP at a constant flow rate results in an increase in cuttings concentration. Hence, the flow rate must be increased together with ROP to compensate for the increase in cuttings generation (Mahmoud et al., 2020).

The rate of penetration during drilling can be influenced by parameters such as the properties of the rock, the speed of rotation of the drill bit, the mass of the drill bit and the properties of the drilling fluid.

The ROP formula is based on the assumption that the drilling rate is proportional to the mechanical energy applied to the bit and inversely proportional to the rock strength. The formula is: ROP = K * W / (D * S) where K is a constant that depends on the bit type and size, W is the weight on bit (WOB), D is the bit diameter, and S is the rock strength. By using this formula, you can estimate the ROP for a given set of drilling parameters and compare it with the actual ROP measured by the sensors (How Can You Optimize Drilling Parameters to Calculate the Drilling Rate?, n.d.).

The ROP can also be predicted by including parameters as Rock Drillability Index. Machine learning methods such as Support Vector Regression (SVR), Artificial Neural Network, Least Squares Support Vector Machines (LSSVM) are helpful as they help handling noisy data and complex interactions between variables.
