Remote mucking is mainly used in underground mining, though it also has applications in surface operations. In underground settings, it enables operators to control loaders and excavators from a safe distance, minimizing exposure to hazards like falling rocks in narrow stopes. Tools like radio remote control (RRC) with video assistance improve both safety and efficiency in these confined environments(Epiroc, n.d.).
In surface mining, remote-controlled machines are often used for support and demolition tasks like shaft maintenance and revitalization, where safety risks are significant and equipment needs to navigate large open areas. These compact remote-controlled demolition machines enhance productivity while reducing the number of personnel needed and limiting their physical exposure(Scales, 2023).
Although remote mucking is traditionally associated with underground mining because of the confined nature of mucking tasks, the technology is advancing to accommodate surface mining situations where hazardous conditions or precise operational control require remote operation(Surface Mining Equipment | Leading Surface and Rotary Drill Rigs, n.d.).
Remote mucking is a game-changer for underground safety, but is the industry missing a trick? Outside of the high-risk stope, where else could we apply tele-remote LHD technology to an equivalent scale of efficiency and safety benefit either deeper underground or in complex surface environments?
