Large mining shovels, also known as power shovels or electric mining shovels, are massive machines used predominantly in surface and strip mining to excavate and load large volumes of earth and fragmented rock. These shovels feature huge buckets (sometimes called dippers) with capacities ranging from around 8 cubic meters to nearly 80 cubic meters or more, enabling them to move enormous quantities of material efficiently(Mining Shovels Selection Guide: Types, Features, Applications | GlobalSpec, n.d.).
Moreso, large mining shovels usually come in hydraulic or electric cable-operated variants. Hydraulic shovels use hydraulic power for digging and loading, while electric shovels often operate via power from the grid through large electric motors driving winches and tracks. The biggest models are typically electric for power and efficiency(Hydraulic Mining Shovels | Mining Excavators | Cat | Caterpillar, n.d.).
The size and capacity of the shovel vary depending on the quantity of the job to be done. Bucket capacities can exceed 80 cubic meters, with some specialized machines holding even larger buckets, equivalent to moving over 100 tons of material per load. In addition to that, the overall machine weight for the largest shovels can be up to 1,000 tons or more, with booms sometimes exceeding 200 feet in length. These machines are usually mounted on tracks and have rotating decks housing engines, counterweights, and operational controls(6060 Hydraulic Mining Shovels | Cat | Caterpillar, n.d.).
