The tragic collapse of an open-pit coal mine in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, China, which occurred on February 22, 2023. This catastrophic event is considered one of the most significant accidents in the coal mining industry.
The collapse resulted in a landslide that left a pile of debris roughly 500 meters across and an estimated 80 meters high. The incident led to the unfortunate loss of 53 lives, with six others injured, and 47 people initially reported missing.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the threat of additional landslides, leading to the suspension of the search for several hours. Despite these challenges, rescuers, equipped with backhoes, bulldozers, and advanced technology, tirelessly worked to find the missing individuals.
