Serra Norte is a large surface mine owned and operated by Vale located in the Carajás region, Pará state, Brazil. The operation is comprised of a fully-integrated mine/rail/port system and produces both fines and concentrate products which are either transferred to the São Luís pellet plant or sold to external customers.
It is one of the world’s largest and lowest-cost iron ore mines primarily due to its large and high-grade orebodies. However, recent challenges related to Run-of-Mine (ROM) availability have limited yearly production. The steep fall of over 15% between 2022 and 2023 supports a more conservative view for the following years production. Still, given Serra Norte’s attributes, risks to this view are skewed to the upside(Mackenzie, 2024).
