Minerals and ores are related concepts, but they refer to different things and are used differently in the field of geology.
Below are some differences:
- Minerals are naturally occurring inorganic solids with a crystalline structure and a definite range of chemical formula while ores are concentrations of minerals in rock that are high enough to be economically extracted for use. All ores are minerals, but all minerals are not necessarily ores.
- A mineral is composed of the same substance throughout. There are about 3000 different minerals in the world. Minerals are made of chemicals – either a single chemical or a combination of chemicals mean while an ore is a mineral occurring in sufficient quantity and containing enough metal to permit its recovery and extraction at a profit. More so, a mineral or an aggregate of minerals from which a valuable constituent (metal), can be profitably mined or extracted is an ore (Frequently Asked Questions : Department of Mining and Geology, n.d.).
- Clay is the mineral of Aluminium whereas Bauxite and Cryolite are the ores of Aluminium.
- Minerals may or may not contain a good percentage of metals, on the other hand, ores always contain a good percentage of metal (What Is the Difference between Mineral and Ore?, n.d.).
- Ores are widely classified into four (04) groups: halides, oxides, sulphites and carbonates whereas minerals are grossly classified into two (02) groups: metallic and non-metallic minerals.
