What is the difference between remote and tele-remote mucking?

  • 0

The key difference between remote mucking and tele-remote mucking lies in the level of operator interaction and control location.

Remote mucking generally involves operating mining equipment like loaders or scoop trams from a safe distance while maintaining direct visual contact with the machine. Operators use handheld radios or control panels with proportional controls to guide equipment manually, often with minimal video or sensor feedback. While this basic remote control setup enhances safety by keeping operators away from the hazardous mucking face, it still requires them to remain close to the site with a clear line of sight(Epiroc, n.d.).

On the other hand, tele-remote mucking is a more advanced approach, allowing operators to control equipment from centralized control rooms, either underground or at surface-level operation centers. These systems use high-definition video, real-time sensor data, and semi-automated features like collision avoidance and assisted steering, enabling operation beyond line-of-sight. Operators can manage multiple machines and continue work during hazardous events such as blasting or shift changes. Additionally, tele-remote setups offer improved ergonomics and comfort, helping to reduce operator fatigue and enhance overall safety(“Remote Operation Technologies Revolutionising Modern Mining Practices,” 2025).

Essentially, remote mucking involves manual control of equipment within the operator’s line of sight, while tele-remote mucking uses networked control systems, advanced sensors, and semi-autonomous capabilities to operate machinery beyond visual range delivering enhanced safety, efficiency, and flexibility in operations.

Remote vs. Tele-Remote Mucking: The difference is where you put the operator. If you could eliminate one bottleneck in your transition to full tele-remote operations today latency in the video feed OR the complexity of training operators in a simulated environment which would you choose and why?
