What measures should be taken to avoid truck collisions in open pit mining?

Heavy vehicle interactions represent one of the most critical safety hazards in open-pit mining operations. Powered haulage accidents frequently result in severe injuries, fatalities, and substantial operational downtime due to restricted operator visibility and dynamic pit environments. Extreme weather conditions such as heavy dust, rain, and fog further compound visibility challenges around massive off-road haul trucks. A comprehensive collision avoidance strategy requires a multi-layered defense. Mine operators must combine advanced proximity technologies, rigorous road engineering standards, and risk-based administrative fatigue controls to protect site personnel.

Modern surface mines deploy multi-sensor proximity detection technology to eliminate 360-degree blind spots around heavy mobile equipment. Systems such as SAFEmine and SICK MINESIC100 integrate global positioning systems (GPS), radio frequency (RF) tracking, laser scanners, 4D radar, and smart cameras. These tools continuously monitor nearby equipment, predict vehicle travel paths, and broadcast real-time trajectory warnings to operators. Advanced controls align with the Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) framework, progressing from advisory proximity alerts to active Level 9 vehicle interventions. Integrated solutions developed by Anglo American, RCT, and Hexagon automatically manage vehicle speed and apply brakes if an operator fails to respond to imminent collision risks. Furthermore, automated haulage operations demand strict digital turnaround protocols and communication channels between autonomous trucks and manned equipment to prevent unexpected route overlaps.

Proper haul road geometry forms the physical foundation of mine site traffic safety. Technical standards established by the Bureau of Mines mandate that road grades match vehicle braking capabilities, ensuring stopping distances remain well within driver sight lines. Road designers must widen lane dimensions on horizontal curves and switchbacks to accommodate large turning radii. Straight segments typically require clearance width equal to half the vehicle width per lane, expanding to 2.5 times vehicle width on single-lane sections. Vertical crests and side slopes also require geometric adjustments to remove visual obstructions. In addition, physical controls such as roadside safety berms; constructed at least as high as the rolling radius of the largest truck tire, and reverse-grade escape lanes effectively capture out-of-control or runaway vehicles.

Oversight and human factors enhance the safety measures. It is required by regulatory bodies like WorkSafe Western Australia for mining organizations to formulate a Principal Mining Hazard Management Plan, which will specify the right-of-way guidelines, speed limits, and parking procedures. There will be regular site inspections to ensure that there is no surface deterioration and hazards are properly marked. In addition, fatigue management is an important aspect of preventing collisions. As per the guidelines set by the Department of Mineral Resources in South Africa, there are risk-based Fatigue Management Programmes. They use bio-rostering scheduling and eye tracking technology to counteract shift fatigue.

Open-pit collision prevention requires a holistic strategy across engineering and operational domains. The combination of Level 9 intervention systems, compliant haul roads, and structured fatigue management plans creates a robust defense against powered haulage accidents. Technology serves as an indispensable support tool for trained operators rather than a total replacement for safe driving practices. Through continuous hazard assessment and rigorous compliance, mining operations can eliminate vehicle interactions, safeguard workers, and sustain zero-harm productivity goals.
