What modern technologies are used in mining shovels?

Modern mining shovels integrate a range of advanced technologies that improve safety, productivity, maintenance, and operational efficiency. These technologies include automation systems, smart sensors, digital controls, advanced drive systems, and material identification sensors.

Modern mining shovels use automation technologies like GNSS, LiDAR, and ultra-wideband sensors for precise positioning and collision avoidance through systems such as TrackShield, TruckShield, DozerShield, and AutoSwing. Automated features like AutoFill enable autonomous digging and loading, improving safety, efficiency, and reducing human error(“Automation of Earth Moving Equipment,” 2017).

Smart shovels use bucket-mounted sensors with x-ray and analytical technology to distinguish ore from waste rock in real time. This data-driven sorting optimizes material handling, improving mill productivity while reducing energy and water consumption. Solutions like ShovelSense™ enable these capabilities and deliver significant operational benefits(Building a Smart Shovel, n.d.).

Electric mining shovels feature advanced drive and control systems using DC or AC motors, multi-stage gearboxes, and rolling element bearings. Modern inverter-based drives, such as ABB’s DriveIT ACS600 Multi Drive, replace outdated thyristor converters, enhancing reliability, productivity, and maintenance efficiency by reducing mean time to repair (MTTR)(Cat® Next Generation Hydraulic Mining Shovels | Cat | Caterpillar, n.d.).

Recent innovations involve using high-strength alloy materials in shovel arms to enhance impact resistance and wear durability, thereby extending service life and minimizing downtime(Innovations in Mining Shovel Arm Technology – News, n.d.).
