What types of mining shovels are commonly used?

  • 0

Mining shovels can be categorized into several types, primarily based on their design, power source, and operational functions, with the most common being hydraulic and electric shovels.

Here’s an overview of the main types used in the mining industry:

Hydraulic Mining Shovels

These are the most prevalent type of shovels in modern mining operations. Hydraulic shovels use hydraulic cylinders and fluid power to move the boom and bucket, offering high precision and control. They are known for their versatility and are widely used for excavation and material loading. Examples include the Caterpillar 6015, 6020, and 6040 hydraulic shovels, which feature various bucket sizes and power outputs to suit different mining needs(Hydraulic Mining Shovels – Cleveland Brothers, n.d.).

Electric Mining Shovels

Electric shovels operate by drawing power directly from an electrical grid, which allows them to achieve higher efficiency and continuous operation over long periods. These shovels are typically massive, such as the P&H 4800XPC, designed for deep and large-scale open-pit mining. They tend to have larger buckets and higher productivity capabilities compared to hydraulic models(Hydraulic Mining Shovels – Cleveland Brothers, n.d.).

Dragline Shovels

A specialized type mainly used for deep excavation and surface mining, draglines are equipped with a long boom and large bucket. They are ideal for precise digging and moving large volumes of overburden or mineral materials. Due to their size, draglines are generally stationary once installed but excel at deep and extensive excavations(Mining Shovels – Shovel Zone, n.d.).

Bucket/Backhoe Shovels

Smaller in comparison but still used for specific mining tasks, these shovels are designed for lighter operations, such as stripping or loading materials. They can be adapted with different buckets depending on the material being mined, like coal, iron ore, or rock.

When loading massive haul trucks, the industry relies on two main types of shovels: hydraulic and electric. What is the key operational difference between these two types, and which do you prefer for high-production open-pit mining? Share your insights!
