Women are at the forefront of transforming Africa’s mining industry shaping policy, attracting investment, leading major firms, and promoting mineral diversification.
In Botswana, Minister of Mining Bogolo Kenewendo is leading structural reforms to boost investor confidence and strengthen the diamond value chain. A major milestone was the February 2025 agreement with De Beers, which doubled Botswana’s share of rough diamonds from the Debswana joint venture—from 25% to 50% over the next decade—and extended the mining license by 25 years. Diamonds remain central to Botswana’s economy, accounting for 80% of exports and 25% of GDP.
In Uganda, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa is revitalizing the mining sector through key partnerships. In March 2025, Uganda signed its first Mineral Production Sharing Agreement to redevelop the Kilembe copper mines with Sarrai Group Limited and Nile Fibreboard Limited. The country is also advancing the Makuutu rare earth project with Ionic Rare Earths, with commercial production expected to begin in 2026(apofeed, 2025).
The Minerals Council is committed to increasing women’s representation and creating a safe, supportive environment where women can thrive and achieve their career goals. This is a key strategic objective, developed in partnership with member company leaders to meet ambitious targets and maintain momentum.
Through the efforts of the Women in Mining project team, the Leadership Forum, and Task Team, this initiative remains central to the Council’s mission and ongoing activities.(“What Is Women in Mining,” 2023)
