ESG Disclosure Frameworks can be considered as one of the most important instruments for evaluating corporate sustainability. At present, there are two leading players in this area, including the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). While the ISSB is primarily based on financial materiality, giving data about how sustainable problems influence a company’s financial value, CSRD requires companies to disclose “double materiality” – not only the information about financial risks but also their impacts on societies and environment (Hummel & Jobst, 2021).
ESG disclosure at its earlier stages was based on fragmented voluntary guidelines; this resulted in so-called “multiverse of non-financial reporting” and led to confusion among various stakeholders (Baboukardos et al., 2023). In particular, in high-impact sectors, such as mining, it concealed ecological and social dangers. Greenwashing and inconsistent data called for standard-setting bodies to move to convergence, and regulators try to develop compatible frameworks and move from voluntary to mandatory reports ecosystems.
Convergence between ISSB and CSRD can be considered in the context of interoperability. Although CSRD, which will be operationalized through the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), covers more ground than ISSB requirements, its financial materiality requirement corresponds to the definitions provided by ISSB. Cooperation of the ISSB with EFRAG ensures that firms do not produce duplicate information. Harmonization of some issues, such as GHG emissions and climate disclosures, contributes to lowering the administrative burden on multinational firms considerably.
This kind of convergence implies that mining reporters have to make major changes in how their operational information is reported. Mining operations are an integral part of supply chains with a substantial footprint on land, water, and people (Maniatakou et al., 2024). Thus, under converged frameworks, mining companies have to provide thorough estimates of Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions, determine biodiversity loss, and disclose human rights practices in the course of value chain. The influence of mining on ecosystems should be financially assessed.
There are both practical challenges and strategic opportunities in meeting these standards from the perspective of the mining industry. It is necessary to invest in rigorous double materiality assessments and obtain assurance from third parties. In order to trace the impact of supply chains precisely, mining organizations will have to make improvements in technology (Baboukardos et al., 2023). On the other hand, mining firms which adopt ISSB and CSRD align can improve their institutional reputation and obtain sustainable financing, thus strengthening their social license to operate.
In sum, ISSB and CSRD convergence means the transition to mandatory and globally aligned disclosure in ESG matters. For the mining industry, there should be a seamless combination of reporting on impact and financial aspects. The mine reporters need to approach these standards as crucial components of corporate strategy, not just compliance activities. Through interoperability and data management, mining firms will be able to meet the criteria of double materiality and become contributors to sustainable development on a global scale (Maniatakou et al., 2024).
