How can stemming length optimization reduce flyrock and improve blast energy confinement?

Surface mining and quarrying operations depend heavily on explosive energy confinement within the borehole. Inert material placed above the explosive charge, known as stemming, prevents detonation gases from venting prematurely into the atmosphere. Deficiencies in stemming design cause collar blowouts, severe airblast, excessive flyrock projection, and wasted explosive power. This summary details how precise stemming length optimization maximizes gas retention, limits hazardous flyrock throw, and reduces overall operational costs through deterministic calculations and rigorous field quality control.

Definite energy confinement requires proper stemming column height above the explosive charge. Insufficient stemming length allows detonation gases to vent early, wasting 25% to over 50% of the explosive energy while generating collar damage and heavy airblast. Conversely, overly long stemming reduces the explosive column length, lowering energy intensity near the collar and forming large boulders in the upper muckpile. Standard rules of thumb set stemming height at 20 times the hole diameter or between 0.7 and 1.2 times the burden. Advanced deterministic models adjust stemming dynamically according to rock density, hole depth, burden, and row position, reducing the powder factor by 18% to 35% while maintaining uniform rock breakage.

Unconfined explosive energy propels rock fragments into the air through cratering, face bursts, or rifling straight up the borehole. Minor deviations in stemming length significantly alter flyrock throw distances. Field measurements indicate that reducing stemming height by as little as 0.9 metres below design can double or triple flyrock throw, extending travel distances from 50 metres up to 95 metres. Optimized stemming practices restrict maximum rock projection to 50 metres, achieving up to a 38% reduction in throw distance. Field operators maintain safety by measuring hole depths, metering bulk explosives, checking top-of-column charge levels to within 0.1 metres of design, and preventing bridging during stemming placement.

Proper stemming length works in tandem with material selection and physical contrivances. Crushed angular aggregate sized between one-tenth and one-twenty-fifth of the hole diameter improves particle interlocking, generating high lateral friction against borehole walls and delaying gas ejection. In field tests, larger crushed aggregates reduced median fragment sizes by 2.73% and improved shovel loading rates compared to fine drill cuttings. Commercial stemming plugs, including plastic moulded inserts, inflatable rubber air plugs, and cement mortar slurries, act as additional physical barriers. These devices increase gas retention times by up to 50 milliseconds, eliminate boulder formation, and lower overall drilling and blasting costs by approximately 20%.

Optimal stemming length forms the cornerstone of safe, efficient bench blasting. Mine operators eliminate energy waste and collar blowouts without sacrificing fragmentation by balancing stemming height against burden and rock properties. Modern stemming protocols protect nearby infrastructure, reduce flyrock hazards, increase hydraulic shovel productivity, and eliminate secondary blasting requirements. Operational teams should replace arbitrary fixed stemming rules with site-calibrated models and strict quality assurance loading procedures.
