Underground mining vocabulary: 30 terms you should know before entering an UG mine.

First-time visitors to underground mining operations encounter an environment defined by unique physical realities, specialised machinery, and a distinct technical lexicon. Communication in subterranean settings requires precision, as clear dialogue directly influences daily productivity, operational efficiency, and miner safety. Industry terminology allows workers to describe complex three-dimensional spatial relationships, identify heavy machinery, and communicate critical atmospheric warnings instantly. This reference guide presents thirty essential underground mining terms divided into three core operational themes: spatial orientation and structural layout, underground equipment and roles, and emergency safety and atmospheric hazard management. Find below 30 useful expressions to understand underground mining.

Face (Working Face): The solid end wall at the active extremity of any excavation where coal, mineral, or ore is extracted during a mining cycle.

Back: The solid rock or coal roof overhead in an underground tunnel, entry, or stope.

Rib: The solid rock or coal wall forming the side of an underground excavation.

Floor / Pavement: The bottom surface level of a mine opening, entry, or roadway.

Inby (Inbye): Directional position meaning deeper into the mine, moving toward the active working face.

Outbye: Directional position meaning moving away from the active working face, toward the shaft or surface exits.

Crosscut: A transverse passageway driven between parallel entries or air courses to maintain ventilation and provide travel routes.

Raise: A vertical or steeply inclined shaft or passage driven upward from an underground drift to a higher level.

Winze: A vertical or inclined opening driven downward from an underground drift to a lower level.

Hanging Wall & Footwall: In inclined orebodies, the hanging wall forms the rock mass directly above the vein or stope, while the footwall forms the rock mass directly beneath it.

Shaft & Cage: A shaft is a vertical excavation connecting surface facilities to subterranean workings, and the cage functions as the elevator transporting miners and equipment.

Skip Hoist: A bucket-shaped elevator conveyance dedicated exclusively to hoisting mined ore, rock, or coal to the surface.

Continuous Miner: A heavy automated machine featuring a rotating drum with cutting teeth designed to rip soft mineral or coal deposits continuously from the face.

Jumbo: A mobile heavy drill rig mounted with multiple mechanical rock drills (drifters) used to bore blast holes into rock faces.

Bogger: A heavy underground loader machine engineered to scoop, haul, and muck broken ore and rock from stopes.

Stope: An underground void or room created by production blasting for the explicit extraction of mineral-bearing ore.

Sump: A low basin or pit excavated at the bottom of a shaft or mine level where water collects prior to pumping.

ROM Pad (Run-of-Mine): A designated surface staging facility where raw, unrefined ore or coal from the mine is stockpiled before processing.

Nipper: An underground trade assistant who manages utility transport, distributes supplies, and assists trade crews.

Crib / Crib Room: The underground lunchroom or break facility where miners gather for meal breaks during shifts.

SCSR (Self-Contained Self-Rescue Device): A portable closed-circuit breathing apparatus worn or carried underground that supplies breathable oxygen during emergency evacuations.

Escapeway: A designated, clearly marked, and regularly maintained subterranean passageway equipped with continuous directional lifelines leading to the surface.

Refuge Alternative: A fortified, isolated chamber engineered to withstand explosion overpressures and supply breathable air, water, and gas scrubbing for trapped personnel.

Black Damp: A suffocating atmospheric mixture composed primarily of carbon dioxide and nitrogen that lacks sufficient oxygen.

Fire Damp: A flammable or explosive gas mixture found underground composed predominantly of methane.

After Damp: Toxic gas mixtures—principally carbon monoxide—remaining in mine atmospheres following an explosion or underground fire.

Scaling: The safety practice of prying loose, hazardous rock down from the back or rib using scaling bars to eliminate fall-of-ground hazards.

Rock Dusting: The application of pulverized, non-combustible limestone dust over coal mine surfaces to maintain incombustible content and prevent coal dust explosions.

Brattice: Heavy canvas or wooden partition curtains installed across entries to route fresh air currents into active working areas.

Gob: The void or mined-out area where mineral deposits have been extracted and where the roof is allowed to collapse behind advancing workings.
