What are common causes of downtime?

In the mining industry, downtime is a critical factor that significantly impacts operational efficiency and profitability. There are two types of downtime: scheduled and unscheduled, each with its distinct characteristics and implications. Scheduled downtime refers to planned interruptions of operations for maintenance, repairs, or upgrades at a time that is convenient for the company and minimises any negative impact for the stakeholders. Unscheduled downtime occurs unexpectedly and is usually the result of equipment breakdowns, failures, or other unforeseen issues(“Types of Downtime,” n.d.).

Common causes of downtime for mining shovels include:

  • Equipment Failure: Breakdowns of drilling rigs, conveyors, ventilation systems, and other critical machinery can force to stop operations until repairs are made.
  • Maintenance: Scheduled maintenance is essential for the longevity and efficiency of mining equipment, but it also requires pausing operations.
  • Safety Inspections: Regular inspections are mandatory to ensure the mine complies with safety regulations and to protect workers from hazards. Traditional methods of inspection can be time-consuming, often requiring partial or full cessation of operations.
  • Environmental Factors: Natural events such as flooding, seismic activity, or extreme weather can compromise mine safety and necessitate temporary closures for assessment and mitigation(Mine Shaft Downtime, n.d.).
  • Regulatory Compliance: Compliance with mining regulations may require periodic shutdowns for audits and inspections to ensure operations meet legal and environmental standards.
  • ‍Material and Loading Issues: Problems like poor fragmentation, oversized rocks, or improper loading practices can slow down digging cycles or cause jams.
  • Power Supply Interruptions: For electric shovels, electrical outages or cable issues can result in downtime.
  • Haul Truck Availability: If haul trucks are not available or are delayed, the shovel may idle while waiting to dump material.

Minimizing downtime requires proactive maintenance, skilled operators, good site management, and effective coordination between shovels and haul trucks to maintain continuous production flow.
