What does “net zero” mean?
In mining, “net zero” refers to the goal of eliminating or drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions across all operations extraction, processing, transport, and waste management so that total emissions released are effectively zero.
This is achieved by minimizing emissions through renewable energy, electrifying equipment, and improving efficiency, while offsetting any remaining emissions using carbon capture and other mitigation strategies(“Digging Deeper to Achieve Net-Zero in the Mining Industry,” n.d.).
The world is racing to a “net zero” future. But what exactly does that phrase mean for the industries and economies that power our daily lives?
