Which countries lead in Iron Ore production?

The world runs on steel, and steel starts with iron ore! Ever wondered which nations are the powerhouses extracting this foundational metal from the Earth? Let’s explore the leading countries that fuel global industries with immense iron ore production.

1.Australia

Almost all this nation’s iron ore (98.9%) is produced in Western Australia, mainly in the Pilbara region. With  51 billion MT or a global share of over 28%, Australia has the biggest deposits of crude ore and iron content globally. The Mount Newman joint venture is the country’s largest iron ore mine.

2. Brazil

The two largest iron ore-producing states are Pará and Minas Gerais, which together account for 98% of the country’s annual production volume. The globe’s biggest iron ore mine – Vale’s Carajas mine – is located in Pará.

3.China

The country may not be in the top spot in terms of iron ore production, but it is currently the biggest user of iron ore and the biggest producer of stainless steel in the world. China’s largest iron ore mine is the Dataigou Mine which is an underground facility in Liaoning.

Over the first eight months of 2024, the nation’s iron ore imports reached 814.95million tons, which represented a 5.2% increase from 2023(Top 10 Iron Ore-Producing Countries in the World, n.d.).

4.India

India’s iron production for 2023 totaled 270 million metric tons of usable iron ore, climbing from the previous year’s total of 251 million metric tons. Its iron content production rose from 156 million metric tons to 170 million metric tons.

5.Russia

Russia’s iron ore production came in at 88 million metric tons for 2023, making comes it the fifth largest iron-producing country in the world.

The region of Belgorod Oblast is home to two of the country’s biggest iron ore producing mines: Metalloinvest MC’s Lebedinsky GOK, which in 2023 produced an estimated 22.05 million metric tons per annum of iron ore; and Novolipetsk Steel’s Stoilensky GOK, which last year produced an estimated 19.56 million metric tons per annum of iron ore.

In response to serious economic sanctions on the country over its aggressive war against Ukraine, Russia’s iron ore exports fell dramatically in 2022 to 84.2 million metric tons from 96 million metric tons in the previous year(success, n.d.).

Iron ore is the bedrock of our modern world, fueling the steel that builds our cities and machines! Which nations stand out as the undisputed leaders in global iron ore production, shaping supply chains and economies worldwide? Share your insights!
