Why grade control is critical in mining operations?

In the mining industry, the bottom-line requirement is the profitable extraction of ore from inert material. In this context, grade control emerges as a vital component. Grade control is the process by which ore, or rock with minerals, is distinguished from waste material during the extraction process. The fundamental requirement of grade control is the provision of the desired amount of ore with the requisite grade to the processing plant. The importance of grade control is highlighted by three critical factors: economic viability, resource optimization, and efficiency.

The first requirement is the direct protection of the mine’s economic model. The mining industry is a capital-intensive business with thin profit margins. The misrouting of waste material to the processing plant as ore causes dilution of the ore. This dilutes the ore and increases the processing cost of non-pay material. It also reduces the grade, making the concentrate unsaleable or unprofitable. The misrouting of ore to the waste dump causes a direct loss, equivalent to throwing money away. The accurate control of grades ensures that every ton of ore is used to contribute to the bottom line.

Grade control is like the compass that guides the mining project. It begins with precise and real-time grade control models, which provide geologists and engineers with a clear view of where the ore is. This precise control helps avoid wasting marginal-grade ore and allows for smart stockpiling of different types of ore. As a result, grade control helps in blending ore in such a manner that it feeds into the mill in a constant and consistent manner, thus maximizing recovery rates and smoothing out the process.

Grade control also helps in sharpening efficiency and sustainability in other areas. For instance, grade control helps reduce waste ore processed in the mill, thus reducing energy, water, and chemical costs. It also helps reduce the environmental impact by directing waste ore to dumps, reducing the likelihood of acid rock drainage from unused ore. Grade control is like the tactical guide for the mining project. It helps in transforming the resource into profitability in a responsible and efficient manner.
