Each year, in line with the Healthy Environment pillar of our Sustainable Mining Plan, we celebrate initiatives across Anglo American that foster lasting, positive environmental outcomes for our operating areas and communities. This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” inspired us to rally communities and corporates worldwide to implement and advocate for innovative solutions.
In celebration of the day, our Kumba Iron Ore colleagues at the Kolomela mine in South Africa are launching the “Bottle Cap Campaign.” This initiative uniquely aims to combat plastic pollution while simultaneously addressing critical societal needs: access to sanitary pads and wheelchairs. In partnership with the ‘Give to Green’ initiative, facilitated by Interwaste, the campaign directly links recycling to social impact:
- For every 250kg of bottle tops collected, 60 sanitary pads are donated.
- For every 500kg of bottle tops collected, a wheelchair is donated to those in need.
Economic barriers in communities surrounding Kolomela – and indeed, other operations – often restrict access to these vital items. This can have adverse effects on education and income-generating opportunities, ultimately impacting overall economic participation. By combining plastic waste reduction through recycling with tangible social benefits, this campaign aims to collectively improve the lives of women, girls, youth, the elderly, and all community members affected by these economic disparities.
Beyond mining, companies have a powerful role in fostering healthier communities and a cleaner planet. Anglo American’s initiative is a shining example. What’s one corporate social responsibility (CSR) effort that has inspired you recently?
