Bald Mountain is an extensive open pit gold mining site located above 7,000 feet in altitude in White Pine County, Nevada. It is positioned about 68 miles southeast of Elko at the southern part of the famous Carlin Trend. The mining project is one of the biggest in the US in terms of land use area.
At present, the asset is wholly owned and operated by Kinross Gold Corporation. Kinross purchased the asset from Barrick Gold in January 2016 at a price of $610 million, taking full control of the asset which was formerly controlled by Placer Dome.
As a conventional heap leaching facility, Bald Mountain operates at a rate of production of 170,000 to 200,000 ounces of gold equivalent annually, with a total amount of proven and probable reserves of more than 1.2 million ounces. The mining process involves the use of carbon adsorption and has been estimated to continue up until 2032.
This mining facility acts as an important economic resource for the remote areas of Nevada, providing hundreds of job opportunities and producing income in the form of taxes. Being a mining facility that occupies large portions of public land, it is closely monitored by the Bureau of Land Management to manage its growth along with conserving nature, especially that of the mule deer herds.
