What are the different mining phases?
The lifecycle of a mining project typically unfolds in five (05) key phases, each with distinct objectives and activities, from initial exploration to the eventual restoration of the land.
The 5 Stages of the Mining Lifecycle:
Exploration & Prospecting: Initial phase involving geological surveys, sampling, and drilling to identify potential mineral deposits and understand the area’s characteristics, including potential conflicts and environmental concerns. Companies enlist geologists and others to understand the characteristics of the land and prospect remote areas in search of mineral deposits.
Planning & Evaluation: Thorough analysis including geological studies, engineering design, metallurgical testing, social performance planning, cost modeling, permitting, and feasibility studies which provide confidence in the reserve potential and economics while minimizing safety and environmental risks.
Construction: Building the necessary infrastructure to transition from a resource to an operational mine. This includes site preparation, road construction, water management, and the development of shafts, pits, processing plants, and support facilities like housing, offices, and power. This phase builds the core facilities and systems enabling the mine to begin generating economic value from resource extraction. It sets the stage for the transition to commercial operations.
Production: The active extraction and processing of the mineral resources using methods like surface or underground mining, involving drilling, excavating, hauling, crushing, grinding, and refining. The method used is determined by the characteristics of the mineral deposit and limits imposed by safety, environmental and economic concerns.
Rehabilitation & Reclamation: Implementing a comprehensive program to ensure public safety, minimize environmental impacts, remove waste, preserve water quality, stabilize land, and establish new landforms and vegetation(Jessica, 2024).
It’s important to ensure key stakeholders are engaged and included in all five (5) stages of the mining lifecycle to assist in the identification of impacts, risks and opportunities to the land and surrounding ecosystems.
