Tshipi Borwa mine is an open pit manganese mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) located in the Northern Cape [1]. Tshipi is not only the largest single manganese mine and exporter from South Africa but is also one of the five largest manganese ore exporters globally [2].
The mine is jointly owned by Ntsimbintle Mining (approximately 50.1%), a black-empowered South African company led by Saki Macozoma, and Jupiter Mines Limited (49.9%), an Australian-listed company backed by major shareholders including Pallinghurst and POSCO. OM Holdings has about a 13% effective interest through a partnership with Ntsimbintle Mining.
Tshipi operates as an open pit mine, producing on average 3.4 million tonnes of manganese ore annually, with the flexibility to scale production in line with market demand. This production capacity is supported by top-tier transport infrastructure, enabling rapid loading and efficient export processes. Tshipi’s transport infrastructure is considered amongst the best in the entire Kalahari manganese field [3].
