One of the biggest zinc mines in the world, Red Dog Operations is situated close to Kotzebue in northwest Alaska, approximately 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of the Arctic Circle [1].
An innovative operating arrangement between the land-owner NANA, a Regional Alaska Native organization controlled by the Iñupiat of northwest Alaska, and the operator Teck led to the development of Red Dog Operations in 1982 [1]. Under the terms of the agreement with NANA, the mine and concentrator properties were built and are being leased.
Red Dog uses traditional drill and blast mining techniques and is an open-pit truck-and-loader operation. Red Dog produces concentrates that are sent to our metallurgical facilities in Trail, British Columbia, as well as to clients in Europe and Asia.
Based on currently developed reserves, the mine life is anticipated to last until 2031 [1].
From 2022 to 2024, the average revenue of the mine was $1922 million and the gross profit (loss) $630 million [1].
