The Super Pit is one of the biggest open pit gold mines in Australia. About 600 kilometers east of Perth, Western Australia, is the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, which is next to the world-class Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) operation.
The Fimiston Open Pit (Super Pit), the Fimiston and Gidji Processing Plants, and the Mount Charlotte Underground Mine are all part of KCGM’s operations.
With over 60 million ounces of gold produced, the Golden Mile in the heart of the Kalgoorlie Goldfield is one of the world’s richest gold resources.
Kalgoorlie is an open pit mine that is rectangular in shape. It is roughly 600 meters deep, 3.5 kilometers long, and 1.5 kilometers wide. The building is large enough to be visible from orbit. Up until 2016, the Boddington gold mine, located in western Australia, overtook the Super Pit as the largest open gold mine in Australia. Approximately 800,000 ounces of gold are produced annually at the Super Pit, accounting for 8% of Australia’s total gold production(Kalgoorlie Super Pit, 2025).
