Robots are transforming underground mine development by enhancing safety, precision, and efficiency in challenging subsurface environments. These advanced machines perform tasks traditionally done by humans, reducing risks and optimizing operations (Mining Technology, 2024).
In underground mining, robots are deployed for drilling, blasting, and material handling. Autonomous drilling robots, like Sandvik’s AutoMine systems, use AI to execute precise drilling patterns, improving fragmentation and reducing manual labor (Sandvik, 2023). Robotic blasting systems, such as Epiroc’s automation solutions, handle explosives placement, minimizing human exposure to hazardous areas (Epiroc, 2024). These systems rely on sensors and cameras to navigate tight tunnels, ensuring accurate task execution (Mining Technology, 2024).
Robots also support surveying and mapping. Drones and robotic crawlers equipped with LiDAR and 3D imaging create detailed mine models, aiding in planning and monitoring structural stability (ScienceDirect, 2023). For instance, Boston Dynamics’ Spot robot inspects hazardous zones, collecting data to prevent collapses (E & MJ, 2023). Material transport robots, like Komatsu’s autonomous haulage systems, move ore efficiently, reducing fuel use and emissions (Komatsu, 2024).
Safety is a key benefit, as robots operate in high-risk areas, protecting workers from cave-ins or toxic gases (E & MJ, 2023). They also boost productivity by working continuously, cutting development time (Sandvik, 2023). However, high costs and technical integration challenges remain barriers (Gartner, 2022). Robots are paving the way for safer, smarter underground mining.
