According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), mining operations are major contributors to global carbon emissions when including direct operations and indirect activities like refining and smelting.
The following measures can steer mining toward a net-zero emissions target in the nearest future:
- Renewable Energy Integration: Switching to wind, solar, and hydropower for mining operations considerably reduces reliance on fuels. Solar farms and wind turbines with battery storage can be integrated into mining sites, to ensure a stable power supply, even in remote locations.
- Electrification of Mining Equipment: Replacing diesel-powered equipment and machinery with electric alternatives, such as battery-driven haul trucks, significantly cuts emissions when paired with renewable energy sources.
- Reforestation and Carbon Offsetting: Trees absorb CO2 as they grow. Investing in reforestation projects is a natural way to balance emissions.
- Energy Efficiency Improvements: This entails improving processes, advanced equipment, and tech integration to minimize energy consumption. For example: Using High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) which produce finer particles can also improve downstream processing efficiency, instead of traditional ball mills, which are energy intensive.
Adopting these strategies thereby enables companies to reduce energy and fuel costs, strengthen trust with stakeholders, and meet demanding environmental standards.
